Wabash Valley College is celebrating a remarkable postseason run as both the Warriors softball and baseball programs have advanced to the NJCAA World Series, putting the school on the national map in a major way.
The WVC softball team earned its trip to nationals by capturing the Region 24 Championship, outlasting Spoon River College in dramatic fashion. The Warriors opened the title series with a 3-1 victory, then finished the job in the “if necessary” game with a hard-fought 2-1 win in eight innings to officially claim the regional crown.
In the opening 3-1 win, Christ Our Rock graduate and freshman Mireya Rose played a key role, going 2-for-4 with a double while driving in two huge runs to help push Wabash Valley ahead.
The Warriors’ roster features several standout athletes from the area, including Kendall McCalla of Carterville, Mara Serafini of Carmi, and Presley White and Selby Patberg of Mount Carmel, all contributing to a season that has now reached the sport’s biggest stage.
Leading the way has been head coach Jade Montgomery, who was recently named Coach of the Year, adding another highlight to an already impressive championship season.
Meanwhile, the Wabash Valley baseball team also secured a spot in the NJCAA World Series after winning the Midwest District title in thrilling walk-off fashion. The Warriors defeated Iowa Western Community College 6-5, capped by a solo home run from Owen Cornett in the bottom of the ninth inning to send WVC to nationals.
With both programs now preparing for the NJCAA World Series, Wabash Valley College continues to prove it is one of the premier athletic institutions in the country, as the Warriors take their postseason momentum onto the national stage.
