A fire at Odin Health Care Center was quickly confined Monday morning.
Odin Fire Chief Greg Smith says there was a lot of confusion when they first arrived before it was determined what was on fire.
“When the first firemen arrived here, we had smoke coming out of the southwest corner of the building,” Smith said. “It ended up being a light ballast that had overheated and caught on fire. The fire did not extend past the light ballast. There’s no damage to the ceiling tiles or attic space. Their actual maintenance guy used an ABC fire extinguisher to put most of the fire out. We didn’t even deploy a hand line or anything like that. The fire was under control pretty quickly. Ther was just a lot of smoke.
Smith says the smoke was kept away from the resident wings.
“The self-closing doors operated properly. The kitchen area was starting to fill up with smoke, but it was quickly dissipated after that. We took all of the residents out on the south wing, and the other two wings sheltered in place once we realized what was actually on fire.
Smith says there were no injuries, but there will be some cleanup in the office area.
Sandoval, Salem, and Centralia City Firemen were called for mutual aid before the extent of the fire was known. The Centralia Fire Protection District stood by at the Odin Fire Station in the event of another fire.
The fire call came in around 8:30 Monday morning.
