The South Central School Board has increased the number of credit hours needed to graduate from 23 to 24. Principal Mike Koenke says the move will require students to take another course of their choice instead of having so much free time in their senior year.
The board also learned of efforts to broaden the number of courses available at the high school. Koenke says four additional dual credit classes are being added next school year.
“Our teachers have done a good job of increasing their own education so that they can offer more dual credit classes for our students,” Koenke said. “For a small school, we offer quite a few dual credit courses, and that helps prepare our kids for college.”
Assistant Principal Sara Rose says additional classes are also being added through outside sources.
“We’ve been meeting with the community colleges and Okaw and several area high schools trying to come up with plans to offer various pathways for our high school students, whether they want to be on the college track, or if they want to do the trade track, just figuring out how to offer those programs.”
Rose explains some of the classes now available.
“Currently we offer Okaw, we offer dual credit, and we do offer some KC Now classes and KC Jumpstart online, but if we have students who are interested in going on campuses to take some of those classes, that’s where we’re looking to expand our programs.”
Rose says students who want to take KC Now classes online are being given two back-to-back study halls to allow them to use their computer to complete the work.
The board was told the South Central High School gym in Farina will be painted this summer and the basketball court resurfaced. Work is now underway on replacing a part of the middle school roof.
In personnel action, Dusk Donaho was hired as Middle School English Teacher, Brock Adams as 5th and 6th grade basketball coach and JJ Wright as volunteer unpaid girls’ assistant basketball coach.
