Planning continues for Marion County’s celebration of the 250th birthday of our country and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The main focus is on a July 3rd dinner and a traveling program to schools.

The committee is asking churches, civic organizations and anyone interested in joining to join the effort.   Reenactment groups, theater students, musical groups, 4-H students and homeschoolers are also being sought to help provide a great program of activities for the dinner.

The traveling program being planned for the schools around the county would center on the 53 signers of the Declaration of Independence and the historical people who have a connection to Marion County like General Frances Marion, for which the county is named, George Rogers Clark and the ten Revolutionary War Patriots are buried in Marion County.

In 1776, Illinois and Marion County didn’t exist and were part of Virginia.

The next meeting of the planning group is Saturday, February 14th.  It will be held at the Bryan Bennett Library beginning at ten am.  Those who would like to be part of the program, but can’t make the meeting, can contact Mark Decker at 708-256-8721.
