Rural Texico home destroyed by fire

A rural Texico home was destroyed by fire early Friday night.

Jefferson Fire officials say the fire was at the Greg Land home at 19,766 North Hail Lane about two miles south of the Field Grade School.

Land was in the process of setting up a deer blind with some other people when he noticed a fire on the outside of the home.  He was able to get his wife and elderly father out of the home without injury.

Fire officials say the blaze spread through the single-story residence with a basement and eventually burned the roof off.   The rest of the home sustained heavy smoke and water damage.   The fire is believed to have spread from a burn pit near the home.  The State Fire Marshal’s office was called to investigate.

Due to the length of the driveway, Kell Firemen laid an 800-foot line to the road where a portable pond was set up to supply water.

Jefferson Fire received mutual aid on the scene from Mt. Vernon, Kell, Bluford, Woodlawn, Waltonville, Centralia District, and Wayne City firefighters.  Irvington and Salem manned the Jefferson Fire Station in the event of another fire.  The fire call came in at five on Friday evening.  Firemen cleared the scene around nine pm.

Firemen were called back around four Saturday morning when the roof began smoldering.  Kell, Bluford, and Mt. Vernon provided mutual aid on the scene with Irvington returning to man the Jefferson Fire Station.
