It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joshua “Jay” C. Smith, who left this world on Sunday, November 2nd, 2025, at the age of 39. Born on Thursday, August 28, 1986, in Centralia, Illinois, the son of Rodney Thomas and Anna Smith.

Jay was a devoted family man. He dedicated his life to his family and work, serving as a Correctional Officer at the Centralia Correctional Center. He was a man of integrity and strength, qualities that he carried into his career and personal life. Known for his passion for sports, Jay spent many joyful hours on the golf course, in the backyard perfecting his BBQ skills, and on the basketball and baseball courts. He also found immense joy in coaching and sharing these activities with his children. Jay’s life was a testament to the importance of family. He found his greatest happiness in the presence of his loved ones, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and cherished memories.

Jay is survived by his mother, Anna Smith of Mt. Vernon; grandmother, Julia Thomas of Centralia; his son, Kaden Richardson of Bluford, IL; his daughter, Jordyn Smith of Mt. Vernon, IL; and his step-son, Noah Richardson of Bluford, IL, Fiancé: Michelle Mosley of Carlyle, and her two sons: Jamar, and Jarryn. His family also includes his brothers and sisters: Andrew Smith and Vonda of Mt. Vernon, Dustin Smith of Mt. Vernon, Antonio Smith of Pennsylvania, Mariah Cunningham and husband Deontre of Centralia, Sydney Thomas of Marion, Isaiah Thomas of Florida, Nathan Thomas of Nashville, TN, Rodney Thomas, Jr. of Centralia, Jalen Thomas and Shyann of Centralia. Two aunts, Marlena Burton, Pamela Thomas, and one uncle, Seth Thomas. He leaves behind several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Jay was predeceased by his father, Rodney Thomas; his beloved daughter, McKenzie Smith; his grandparents, Jerry and Julia Smith; and his grandfather, Ronald Thomas.

A Visitation will be held Friday, November 7, 2025 from Noon until 1:00 PM at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia. A Graveside Service will follow at Elmwood Cemetery with Pastor Val Powe officiating.
