Central City officials and volunteers planning help for hurricane victims

Central City village officials and local volunteers and donors are teaming up to provide assistance to those impacted when Hurricane Helene battered North Carolina last month.

Central City Village Clerk Stephanie Waggoner, Mayor Neely Reed and the village’s public works director, Shane Swartzlander, will be part of a group of around a dozen people that will leave next Monday for North Carolina and spend the next few days there before returning home.

While in North Carolina, Reed says volunteers will provide meals for people who have been affected by the storm and will assess the level of need in the area, with the likelihood of returning in the future.

Waggoner says members of the local community have made a tremendous amount of donations in a short period of time.

“We’ve organized this in the last week and a half, and the community is just — the outpouring just touches your heart. It’s just so nice, the donations we’ve gotten.”

So far, donations have included thousands of bottles of water, as well as personal hygiene products and other items.
