We announce the passing of Mary Corine “Codie” Peterson, 95, on 22 September 2025, who lived in Centralia for over 72 years

Codie was born in Opdyke, Illinois on  June 28th, 1930, daughter of Opal (Waite) and Newton Scott. Codie grew up on her Grandparents’ farm on Liberty Road outside of Mt. Vernon. She attended a 1-room school through 8th grade and later moved into the town of Mt. Vernon, where Codie attended Mt. Vernon High School, graduating in 1948. Codie married Marvin “Pete” Peterson on 25 August 1950, in Mt Vernon, and became a homemaker. They moved to Centralia in 1953.

Codie is survived by six children: LeRoy (Luanne H.); James (Mary Ann L.); Joseph (Verdell P.); Thomas (Deb P.);  LouAnn (Charlie S.); and Paul (Astaridh S.). Codie is also survived by eight grandchildren: Marya, Michelle, Tim, Kelly, Adam, Arrena, Kathryn, and Robert, along with five great-grandchildren: Eliza, Juliette, Ari, Nina, and Coraline. Also surviving are her brother, Bill (Teresa) Hanley, of Du Quoin, Illinois, her sister, Donna (Ron Hooper) of Eldorado, IL, and her dearest cousin, Carolyn Tate, of Bethalto, IL. Codie was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin A. Peterson; parents, Opal (Waite) Hanley and Newton Scott; her sisters, Lorine “Lodie” (Scott) Greenwalt, and Lois Calvin; and her brother, Don Hanley.

Codie was active in the Centralia community and regularly attended church and various clubs including: Cornerstone United Methodist Church; AARP – President of Centralia Chapter for 3 yrs., Lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Club # 2055; Salvation Army Volunteer; Volunteer at CARE supporting families in need; Volunteer at the Centralia Balloon Festival; and Yoga Teacher for many years (until age 94). Codie was also a traveler – across the United States and Europe.

A memorial service will be held at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon at a later date. In memory of Codie, memorial donations may be made to the Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Centralia and will be accepted by the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street in Centralia, IL 62801 (618) 532-3523, who is honored to serve the Peterson family.
