A 43-year-old Salem man has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty in Marion County Court Tuesday to aggravated unlawful restraint and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

The charges against Robert Clanton of Church Street stem from a July incident where he struck a Salem woman in the back of the head over several hours.   The woman was also stabbed in the shoulder with a kitchen knife that he used to hold her against her will.   Clanton was also accused of threatening to kill the woman.

Salem Police say the woman was able to get out of the home without Clanton noticing and walk the block to the Salem Police Station for help.   She was then taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment.

Clanton was taken into custody without incident when police went to the home and he answered the door.

As part of the negotiated plea, charges of aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, and aggravated assault with use of a deadly weapon were dropped.
