Salem Fire Protection District Firemen help ventililate the Thomas Gallepos home after quickly knocking down a kitchen fire early Sunday night.

A home on the northwest side of Salem was damaged by fire early Sunday night.

Assistant Salem Fire Chief Bill Fulton says the fire was at the Thomas Gallepos residence at 201 Lamar Drive.

“We were told en route we had a kitchen fire.  Apparently, they were cooking some meat on the stove and the grease caught fire.  We had a major grease fire in there.  The guys went in the back door and got a knockdown on that.  Then we had to check for a possible extension of the fire up into the attic.”

Fulton says the home received considerable damage.

“There is quite a bit of damage around the stove area up into the ceiling area.  Other than that, it’s just mainly on the stove and so forth.”

There was only considerable smoke and no flames visible from outside when firemen arrived.  Both electricity and gas were turned off to the home and the Red Cross was called to assist the family.  Firemen also used a large fan to draw smoke out of the home.

Odin firemen provided mutual aid on the scene while Kell Firemen stood by at the Salem Fire Station in the event of another fire.

The fire alarm came in just before seven Sunday night.
