Unemployment in Marion County jumped to 6.3-percent in July.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports the rate in Marion County is up four-tenths of a percent from June and is eight-tenths of a percent higher than last year. The numbers translate into 1,083 on the unemployment rolls, up 76 from June. The county’s work force also grew by about 70 people to 17,184.
Unemployment was up in all other area counties as well. Washington County’s rate increased four-tenths of a percent to 3.9 percent. Jefferson County’s rate is up three-tenths of a percent to 6 percent. Clinton County’s rate was up three-tenths of a percent to 4.4 percent. Fayette County’s rate also increased three-tenths of a percent to 5.9 percent. Clay County’s rate is up eight-tenths of a percent to 6.8 percent. All the rates are in the area of one percent higher than a year ago.
Statewide, unemployment is 6.2-percent.
In the Centralia-Mt. Vernon job market, total nonfarm employment is down by 150 jobs over the past year. The biggest job increase area was private education and health services up 150, leisure-hospitality up 100, natural resources-mining as well as construction were up 50 jobs apiece. There was no change in Information, Other Services, Financial Activities or Government sectors year over year. A 250 employee was seen in trade-transportation-utilities. Manufacturing jobs have decreased 175. Professional-Business Services decreased 100.
