The Wamac City Council, during its meeting on Monday evening, approved an appropriations ordinance for the fiscal year that began on June 1 and runs through May 31, 2025.

The approved appropriations for the fiscal year total $1,722,693. City Clerk Marian Suhl reported that the number is smaller this year compared to a year ago, noting that the Wamac City Park capital improvement outlay has been reduced. Suhl also says animal control-related costs have been removed from the appropriations; the council voted last month to terminate the animal control officer position because there was not a facility where the officer could take captured animals.

In other business, Mayor Jackie “Butch” Mathus reported that he had met with the Marion County Board and with mayors of other small local communities as they tried to resolve the ongoing animal control issues in the county. Mathus thanked the county board members for working on the issue, but says he will continue to seek solutions to the problem.
