The Salem Grade School Board was told at Thursday night’s meeting that they have received final approval and will be offering free lunch and breakfast to all students in the coming school year.
Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe feels the program will be a benefit to many families.
“We could lose a little bit of money, but when we did the formula and looked at it we feel comfortable. It’s not a huge loss, and we feel it’s worth that little bit of a loss rather than have people struggle trying to pay their bill.”
But Foppe says those who have previous lunch balances will still need to pay them off in full.
Registration information for the coming school year was released. Online registration for returning students will begin July 22nd. Parents will receive an email the morning of the 22nd, giving them directions on the registration process. There will be registration for new students only by appointment on July 31st from nine to three and on August 1st from noon to six. New student parents will need to call the schools on Monday, July 29th and Tuesday, July 30th, in order to make an appointment to come register their new student. Parents of returning students that need to drop off anything, will need to contact the office to set a time to do so with the office staff.
Foppe announced new playground equipment for Franklin Park School has been selected.
“They will take out the old equipment, and if it’s salvageable we will be donating it. We just want to make sure it’s safe… This (new) equipment will have slides, climbing for the older kids, and swings on both sides. It will be our school colors of red, black, gray and white, and it will have mulch around it.”
Foppe says the equipment should be installed before the start of the school.
The Superintendent says the flooring replacement project in part of Franklin Park is completed and the replacement of outdoor classroom doors at Hawthorn is currently underway. The new doors will have metal panels on each side instead of windows to improve security.
