South Central School District Superintendent Kerry Herdes told the school board Wednesday night they are closing the books on ESSER Three funding, the final money made available by the federal government for COVID-19 relief.

Herdes says there was a lot of red tape, but the ESSER Three money helped the school district complete several projects.

“Purifying air and stuff that would fit the covid criteria, plus it helped us to build on a nice safe area for our kids to pass from one building to the next,” Herdes said. “The other thing we did that we’re finished expending is the ESSER Three funds that help deal with learning loss, helping students, proving materials, providing staff.”

Herdes says they plan to keep the staff and materials in place to continue offering assistance to students who have fallen behind.  A ribbon cutting and tours of the new sections of the middle school has been set for six pm on August 21st at the start of the August school board meeting.

Herdes says work is scheduled to begin Thursday on one of their major summer projects.

“The gym at the high school is in dire need of a roof. We have that project scheduled already, but with the recent rains it’s started leaking in more areas than just in the sides. It will probably take ten to fourteen days to replace.”

Herdes says they plan to donate a used large refrigerator to the Kinmundy Food Pantry after it is taken out of service with installation of a new larger outside refrigeration unit at South Central Elementary.

The board approved several extra-curricular assignments.  Madison Lockhart will be a paid assistant middle school volleyball coach and volunteer high school volleyball coach.  Divo Neschese was approved as an unpaid assistance for the band.
