Demolition was completed last week on the South Central Transit building on Route 37 North in Mt. Vernon after being heavily damaged by a March tornado.
Manager Sarah Nollman Hodge is estimating damage to the building and its contents at about $1-million.
While no decision has been made on replacing the facility, Hodge says fortunately they have been able to work with a neighboring property owner on renting his building that has room for three offices. That has allowed the transit system to resume normal operations. The busses are utilizing the same area as always on the SCT property.
Hodge notes despite the damage, SCT had all services restored in Jefferson County within two weeks of the storm.
Hodge says the transit board will look at both constructing a replacement building on the same property or at a new location.
