The Salem Fire Protection District was called to a fire in a detached garage at 2154 Cedar Avenue just off Route 37 and Tonti Road early Sunday morning.
Fire officials say the fire apparently started from some burn barrels very close to the garage that had been used a few hours earlier. The fire caused extensive damage to the roof trusses, but never burned through the roof. However, the east wall was burned off. There were two vehicles parked inside that were damaged, but may be repairable. Firemen were able to keep the fire away from the home that was just four feet away.
After the fire had been put out firemen were concerned about the source of smoke still in the air. It was traced to a dryer at the far end of the home that had lint inside catch fire. Firemen then put out that fire with damage contained to inside the dryer.
The fire call came in at 3:02 Sunday morning as firemen were just wrapping up a search of Town Creek. Odin Firemen provided mutual aid at the scene while Kell Firemen covered the Salem Fire Station in the event of another fire. Firemen were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
