Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigations Zone 6 says a 47-year-old East Alton man who exchanged shots with police late Thursday night died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The victim is identified as Shannon Musgraves.  The cause of death was determined by the Madison County Coroner during a Friday autopsy.

Preliminary investigation indicated members of the East Alton and Bethalto Police Department were exiting their vehicles in the area of the shots fired call when they were fired upon from a subject inside the residence.  Officers returned fire, with no officer injuries.  The suspect then barricaded himself inside his residence and East Alton Police requested assistance from the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System Special Response Team.  The team located Musgraves inside his home with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Illinois State Police continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting and will provide its findings to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office for review once it is completed.
