Charles Earl Mathis, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025, at the age of 69.
Born on Saturday, August 6, 1955, in Wichita, Kansas, son of Jack W. Mathis and Barbara Jane (Bryant) Mathis.
Charles moved to Centralia, Illinois, in 1957. In 1985, Charles proudly served his country during the Gulf War as a member of the United States Army. His dedication and service to his nation were defining elements of his character, and he held his time in the military with pride.
On February 24, 2000, Charles married the love of his life, Rosemary Starr, with whom he shared more than two decades of happiness until her passing on July 22, 2024.
Charles is remembered by his daughters, Elizabeth (James) Stewart, Stepfanie (RC) Smoot, and Serena (Daniel) Claypool; his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his brother, Dusty (Geraldine) Mathis. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Laura Mathis, Anna Miller, Brenda Mitchell, Christina Hart, and Carmen (Walter) Thouvenin; his brothers-in-law, Lloyd Starr Jr., Charlie Starr, and John Starr; along with numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Barbara Mathis; his wife, Rosemary Mathis; his daughter, Megan Brown; and his grandsons, Phoenix Ho and Michael Pinkston. Charles was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held in his honor at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia, Illinois, on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 11:00 am. Military Honors will be accorded at the gravesite by the Centralia American Legion Post 446 and the Centralia V.F.W. Post 2055.
