All 45 unclaimed bicycles offered for free during a Saturday bicycle giveaway by Salem Police found new owners.

Deputy Police Chief Susan Miller says the bikes were all picked up over the past few years and were never claimed.   She says the police department could easily return bikes if they were registered.

“If someone has registered their bike then we would be able to return it to them.  But unfortunately, these bikes have not been registered so we have no way to contact an owner.”

Miller says the process is simple and takes only a few minutes to complete at the Salem Police Department.

“It’s one short half sheet of paper with your name, address, phone number, and information about the bike.”

Miller hopes the use of the registration process will increase to avoid the large number of bicycles that go unclaimed each year.  Before leaving with a bike on Saturday, the new owners had to get them registered.

The police department collected $10 in donations for Shop with a Cop from those in attendance.
