Salem Fire Protection District Chief Jim Cerny says two occupants of a car that ran off Selmaville  Road on the curves near Scout Road were airlifted from nearby the scene by medical helicopters.

Initial information from Illinois State Police says the driver was northbound south of Joy Lane when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road.  The car then struck a culvert and overturned.   The driver as well as three passengers were injured.  The names of those involved have not been released.

Salem Fire Protection District Chief Jim Cerny says they had to extricate one of the occupants while another was thrown from the vehicle which came to rest in a deep ditch.  Two of those injured were taken to the nearby Salem Fire Protection District training center on Selmaville Road where the helicopters landed to transport them to St. Louis Hospitals.

The other two were transported by ground ambulances to an area hospital.

The road was closed for more than five hours as police handled the crash and completed an accident reconstruction.

The crash was first reported at 9:05 Friday morning.   Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies handled the scene until State Police arrived.
