There were 155 students from eight area schools that participated in the Ag in the Classroom Marion County Farm Safety Day.

Ag in the Classroom Teacher Meggan Hiestand says students from South Central, Kell, Trinity Lutheran, Centralia Junior High, Iuka, Central City, Raccoon, and Patoka Schools broke into groups for the various activities

“This year we have grain safety, water safety, fire safety, chemical safety…fit to be a farmer which is a relay race to teach kids that farmers wear many hats.  And then we have Air Evac.”

Hiestand explains the goal of the yearly program.

“Just to teach kids how to be safer and think before they do.”

Before splitting into groups, all the students listened to a gun safety program put on by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police Officer.

Sponsors for the program include the Marion County Farm Bureau, South Central FFA, Air Evac, Salem Fire Protection District, and the US Army Corps of Engineers.
