A line of heavy thunderstorms prompted both severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings as it crossed South Central Illinois early Thursday night.

Weatherology meteorologists noted areas of rotation in the clouds as the storm passed over the Boulder, Patoka, Vernon, and Kinmundy areas and again north of US 50 between Salem and Iuka.  Fortunately, no building damage has been reported.  A flag pole at the entrance to Central City on US 51 was bent by the strong winds.  Hail as large as an inch and a half was reported in the Woodlawn area.  The Marion County Sheriff’s Department reported a tree down across St. Peter Road north of Gentry Road northwest of Kinmundy and another tree down this morning partially across Kell Road east of Kell Grade School.

The Salem Water Plant recorded 83-hundredths of an inch of rain and the Centralia Water Treatment Plant 68-hundredths of an inch.   Raccoon Lake was just 2.7 inches below the spillway at seven am.  One gate has been cracked open to slightly lower the lake level, which should not be enough to cause downstream flooding.
