The Iuka Fire Department has received good news.  Its fire insurance rating has improved and the department has received a $26,000 grant to purchase new equipment.

The fire department has been informed its ISO rating has improved from a seven to a six and is just about three points shy of a five.  The rating from the independent company is used by insurance companies to set rates for fire insurance and should result in savings to district residents.   Ratings range from one for an exemplary fire suppression program to 10 for an area’s fire suppression program that does not meet ISO’s minimum criteria.

Iuka Fire Chief Kenny Eagan says the fire district has a few items to consider for improvement before the next inspection which is about every five years.  The hope is to keep making improvements before the next inspection which will be in about five years.  Eagan says their hope is to keep making improvements to the equipment and training so residents continue to see improvements to their homeowner’s insurance cost.

The department has also announced it has received a $26,000 small equipment grant through the State Fire Marshal’s office.  It will be used to purchase four complete self contained breathing apparatus units with upgraded thermal detection capabilities .  The equipment will be on the first truck out to structure fires.  The units will replace used equipment purchased several years ago.
