A 33-year-old Mt. Vernon man was formally charged in Jefferson County Court on Tuesday with being a felon in possession of a firearm and aggravated assault with use of a deadly weapon following a large fight at Veterans Park early Monday night.
Mt. Vernon Police say Antonio McShane was arrested after allegedly being seen battering another person in the park during a gathering of 50 to 75 people. Police say numerous people reported that McShane had been brandishing a firearm. As police were attempting to take McShane into custody, others were allegedly attempting to bypass officers to gain entry into a van where police had been told the weapon had been placed.
After calling all available Mt. Vernon officers, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies, and off-duty officers to the scene, they were able to form a line to secure the area around the van. The van was later towed to the Mt. Vernon Police Department where a search warrant was later executed and a loaded handgun was located.
In addition to McShane, two female juveniles were detained for obstructing officers but were later issued citations for resisting arrest/obstructing and were released to their parents.
The Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s office has filed a petition to deny McShane release from custody while his case is pending. A hearing is set for Wednesday.
