Marion County Sheriff encouraging those interested in police work to apply for upcoming merit test

By Bruce Kropp Apr 7, 2024 | 9:18 PM

Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps says Monday at four is the deadline to apply to be a Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy.

The merit board will be conducting testing soon after the deadline.  Cripps says with the addition of at least one and possibly two school resource officers and a sheriff’s deputy to be assigned full-time to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, he expects some openings soon after the testing process is complete.

“If you have ever had an interest in being involved in law enforcement, the Marion County Sheriff’s Department is an awesome place to work.  We have some of the best employees in the world, in my opinion.  I hope you will take the time to fill out an application. If you work for another police department and want to work closer to home we would be interested in talking to you.   Any questions, contact me at the sheriff’s department or talk to one of my deputies.  Everyone has been briefed on what is going on.”

Cripps says application forms are available from the law enforcement center.  Just come in the front door.  They can also be downloaded from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department app in the Join Our Team section.  Applications must be returned to the sheriff’s office by four Monday afternoon.

Starting pay for sheriff’s deputies is now $55,842 a year with the benefit of a take-home squad car.
