State Police issued nearly 6,000 citations and warnings in March during ‘Operation Fast Break’ on Interstate 57 from the Missouri state line in deep Southern Illinois to the northern Champaign County border.
The goal was to reduce crashes and save lives by taking proactive steps to correct unsafe driving behavior.
State Police report 1,801 speeding citations were issued and 2,521 speeding warnings were issued. There were 1,385 motor carrier safety inspections and six firearms seized. The troopers also issued 52 Move Over ‘Scott’s Law’ citations, made seven driving under the influence arrests, and issued 187 citations for driving on a suspended or revoked license or having no driver’s license at all.
Patrol officers from Troops 7,9, and 10 participated. They received assistance from ISP central and south Special Operations Group’s Fatal Four unit and Highway Interdiction Team to saturate I-57.
State Police note speeding is a contributing factor in nearly one-third of all fatality crashes.
