Work is scheduled to start this week on making sidewalks ADA-compliant at street intersections along Route 161 between Beech and Pleasant Avenue in Centralia.  There will also be some sections of the asphalt street surface that will be replaced due to its rough condition.   The project also includes additional signage, crosswalk flashers, and marking of pedestrian crossings.

The work is being completed by the Illinois Department of Transportation through a contract issued to Killion Brothers of Jerseyville.

Centralia Public Works Director Jeff Schwartz says the work is expected to take until July or August to complete.

The Illinois Department of Transportation reports one lane will remain open throughout the project.  However, they say motorists should expect delays and are encouraging the use of alternate routes.  Drivers are also urged to reduce speed, be alert for changing conditions, obey all construction signage, and refrain from using mobile devices while approaching and traveling through the work zone.
