Salem Varsity Falls, JV Wins At Murphysboro…Both Teams In Action Saturday

The Salem Wildcats head to Belleville West today for the PBR Showcase.  They will play Washington at 10am followed by a 12:15 game with Galesburg.

The varsity fell to 0-2 yesterday with an 8-7 loss at Murphysboro.  Salem trailed 6-2 in the top of the sixth, before scoring 5 times to take the lead.  Josh Powless had a bases loaded double to score 3 runs and Colton Shelton had a pinch-hit single to give Salem the 7-6 lead.  The Red Devils plated 2 runs in their half of the sixth and held off Salem in the final inning for the win.  Ayden Rose threw well for the Cats going 4.1 allowing 3 hits and only 1 earned run.  At the plate, Powless finished with 3 hits, 2 doubles and drove in 4. . Salem also got RBI from Gavin Zimmermann and Nate Paulson.

The Salem JV scored 11 times in the 3rd and 4th innings on their way to a 13-4 victory.  Carter Lowe had 3 hits and 4 RBI.  Keytin Grawe also drove in 4 with RBI also from Eli Lograsso, Colton Rogers and Avery Gullion.  Payton Gullion reached base and scored 3 times.  Brody Collier was the winning pitcher going 6 innings allowing 8 hits and 3 earned runs.  Grawe got the final 3 outs.  Salem JV will play at the High School field today for a double header with Johnston City starting at 11.

Also in prep baseball yesterday, Benton beat Hardin County 5-4,l Brownstown/St Elmo over Hillsboro 10-8, Effingham beat Casey 13-1, North Clay lost at Father McGivney 12-2 and Nashville over Hamilton County 9-1.


In prep softball, Benton beat Massac County 19-7, Columbia over Civic Memorial 9-1, Edwardsville shutout Breese Central 10-0, Freeburg beat Red Bud 3-1 and Pinckneyville nipped Wesclin 4-2.
