Principal Amanda Marshall of Schiller School gave the curriculum report for the Centralia City Schools Board meeting on Tuesday. Marshall discussed learning programs at Schiller, including electronic reading and math programs used to guide learning and track student progress. She also discussed the after-school program in which small groups of students in each class, as well as a group of ELL students, receive additional attention and assistance outside of school hours.
Marshall says this program has been effective, especially for English learners, describing their results with the reading program’s letter-based progress system.
“These kiddos are making leaps and bounds. I’ll remind you that the program didn’t start until November. From November until second quarter we’ve had kids go from C to E, which is huge. B to E, G to H, O to S, this is awesome,” Marshall said. “It lets us know that these kids are getting what they need to get in that after-school program.”
In new business, the board adopted the school calendar for the next school year. Eighth grade graduation at Centralia Junior High is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, at 6 PM. The board approved Glass and Shuffett to perform the yearly audit at a cost not to exceed $15,000, approved a three-year extension with Skyward, and approved a renewal with Frontline Education for absence management and evaluation management software for $16,852. The board also approved the category 1 E-rate winning bids from Clearwave for WAN and internet access.
In the superintendent’s report, Craig Clark noted events and celebrations throughout the school district, and made a point to congratulate CJHS Boys Basketball for winning the SIJHSAA state title for the first time in fourteen years.
