Centralia High School honored its outstanding students on Monday at the annual Rotary Scholastic Honors ceremony in the CHS Trout Arena

Centralia High School’s Scholastic Award seniors, who earned cumulative grade point averages of 3.895 or higher.

School staff recognized students who have earned high marks in individual courses and those with high overall grade point averages, SAT scores and class ranks.

Principal Reid Shipley says the event is a good opportunity to commend high-achieving students, many of whom also take part in activities outside the classroom.

“This is always one of the special nights for honor students, to recognize academic achievement, especially for our seniors that have put four years in at this point. It’s special to them, and as I mentioned tonight, too, the consistency they’ve shown over the last four years, I think, is as important as anything. To stick it out, do that much work, that hard work — honors classes, AP classes, all of those things — plus most of those kids who received an award tonight are also in extracurricular activities. They may be in band, they may be in plays, drama, sports, you name it, so not only are they achieving a high level academically, they are also doing other things to support the school and help out where they can, in other areas.”

Shipley says parental involvement has been important for many of the students who were honored.

“I think it’s more of a reflection on the parents and them pushing their kids to achievement and explaining the expectations, success, again not just academics, but across the board in everything — their support, going to their student functions, the parents that come to the assemblies, to the awards nights like tonight. Kids don’t often recognize it at the time, when they’re in it, but down the road and later on, they realize how much their parents supported them in those activities and in their academics.”

Mark Myers, president of the Centralia Rotary, addressed the audience and congratulated the honorees for achieving success during a pivotal time in their lives.

Shipley says CHS is thankful to the Rotary for its ongoing support and sponsorship of the honors night.

“We’re always appreciative to the Rotary for sponsoring tonight. It does help; it also gives the kids a moment to hear a little bit about the Rotary. Mr. Myers spoke this evening about helping others — what can you do to help others, your neighbor or whoever. It’s always good to hear a little bit of words of wisdom on the side, as well.”

Monday’s ceremony also included recognition of the CHS Scholar Bowl team, which won nine of its 15 matches this season and finished third at regionals. School staff recognized Carter Lorence as Scholar Bowl junior varsity MVP. John Veller was honored for a second straight year as Scholar Bowl varsity MVP, and received a $1,000 scholarship check from the Rotary for the accomplishment.
