The Benton Rangers are into the state semifinals in Class 2a after knocking off a gritty Teutopolis squad 43-36 at SIU-Carbondale. Benton improves to 32-3 with the win and will play Byron in the state semi on Thursday. Teutopolis season ends at 24-11. The Rangers will get their first State trophy in 32 years when they took 3rd place in 1992.
The Rangers built a 27-12 lead at halftime, but TTown refused to quit and eventually would pull within 33-31 midway through the 4th but the Rangers would hold on.
Isaac Billington led Benton with 13. Docker Tedeschi had 6 points. Joseph Niebrugge and Mitch Koester led TTown with 9 each.
In other Super Sectionals last night in 2a, Chicago Phillips beat Beecher 73-58 at Joliet Catholic, Williamsville over Macomb at Springfield 36-32 and Byron beat Latin 85-71 at Sterling.
The State Semifinal schedule for Thursday in 2a will be Williamsville v. Chicago Phillips at 2pm on Thursday followed by Benton and Byron at 3:45. The losers will play for 3rd that evening at 8:15 with the winners playing in Saturdays championship.
Homewood Flossmoor Comes Back To Beat Curie, 4a Super Sectional Results
In Class 4a, Homewood Flossmoor came back to beat Curie at UIC 60-58.
Palatine got a layup from Connor May with 2 seconds left to beat Gurnee 55-53.
New Trier over Glenbard North at Hoffman Estates 65-41.
Normal Community routed Downers Grove North 53-29.
The 4a state semifinals at the State Farm Center in Champaign will be held on Friday with Palatine and Normal at 2pm followed by Flossmoor and New Trier at 3:45. The 3rd place game is Friday night at 8:15 with the championship on Saturday.
