It’s Sweet 16 Sectional Finals night in boys prep basketball. Our highlighted game is at the Triad 3a Sectional where arch rivals Mount Vernon who is 24-9 and the 31-2 Centralia Orphans will meet for a trip to the Elite 8 in Springfield next week. This will be the 3rd meeting between the two teams with each team splitting the previous two games.
The winner will play the winner from the Lincoln Sectional, which features 33-1 Mt Zion against the Central State Eight champion Decatur MacArthur.
In 1a, the Christ Our Rock Stallions extremely tough schedule has paid off as they took their lumps early in the season, but saved their best basketball for the post season where the Stallions won the school’s first ever Regional title, followed by the first ever Sectional win knocking off state-ranked Tuscola. They enter tonight at 18-15 taking on Arcola at St Anthony. Arcola enters at 27-6 and winners of the Lincoln Prairie Conference where they ran through it undefeated. Game time at 6pm from St Anthony.
The winner will get the winner at NCOE between Mounds Meridian and Gibault. Mounds enters at 26-8 and won the South Egyptian Conference as they take on the defending 1a state champion Gibault after they beat 4th ranked Goreville in the Sectional semifinal. The Super Sectional between the winners from Effingham and NCOE will be held at EIU in Charleston.
It will be a dandy at the 2a Benton Sectional tonight as 31-2 Breese Central takes on 23-3 Benton for a trip to the Elite 8. The winner advances to play the winner from Shelbyville featuring 27-6 St Joseph Ogden and 21-10 TTown. That Super Sectional will be held at SIU-Carbondale.
