Marion County Supervisor of Assessment gets board support in push to eliminate publication of assessment changes

Marion County Supervisor of Assessments Mark Miller.

The Marion County Board unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday night asking the state legislature to do away with the requirement that the quadrennial reassessments and yearly assessment changes be published in a newspaper.

Supervisor of Assessments Mark Miller says the county is currently paying $28,000 a year in quadrennial years and $11,000 in publication costs in other years. He passed around a copy of the 2023 publication, noting it is nearly impossible to find information in the page after page of small print.

Miller says anyone with an assessment change has it mailed to them directly and the county website has the same assessment listings, but they are searchable and have much more information on the property including photos.

Miller, who is working with their state association, plans to ask supervisors of assessments in other counties to pass similar resolutions. He feels the bill has a good chance of passing this year since it is not tied to the end of other required newspaper publications this year and has the support of the county officials association.
