A fire caused minor damage to one unit of an eight-unit building at the Mills Crossing Apartments on Mills Cart Road Friday morning.

Salem Fire Protection District Chief Jim Cerny explains the situation upon their arrival.

“We had fire showing out of the vent from the bathroom showing out through the roof.  The bathroom fan had shorted out and caught fire and then extended up into the ceiling and roof.”

Cerny explained the extent of the damage.

“There was minor damage to the roof and they will have to replace some of the ceiling and the bathroom fan.”

Cerny says the apartment itself had very minor smoke damage as the fire went up into the attic.

The resident of the apartment was home at the time when the fire broke out and exited safely as did the other occupants of the building.

The fire call came in around 8:30 Friday morning with firemen on the scene for just under an hour.  Odin Firemen provided mutual aid at the scene and provided the ventilation saw to open the roof while Kell Firemen stood by at the Salem Fire Station in the event of another fire.
