AT&T customers in South Central Illinois are among those in a wide section of the Midwest and South left without service on Thursday.

In a statement to ABC News, the company confirmed the outage and advised customers to make calls over Wi-Fi.

“Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning. We are working urgently to restore service to them. We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored,” an AT&T spokesperson said.

AT&T had more than 64,000 outages Thursday morning.   The outages began at about 2:30 am.   The carrier is the country’s largest, with 240 million subscribers.

Initial reports also indicated problems on the Verizon and T-Mobile systems, but both companies say their networks are operating normally with reports to Down Detector most likely the result of customers trying to connect with AT&T customers.

ABC News says so far no reason has been given for the outages.
