Ice melts and winter weather advisory lifted as road conditions return to near normal in South Central Illinois (updated 5:45 pm)

Road conditions have returned to normal across South Central Illinois.  You’ll still find some slick spots on roads north of Fayette County.  I-57 begins having scattered slippery spots in Champaign County up to the south Chicago suburbs.  Travel to St. Louis and Indiana on I-64 and I-70 have all returned to normal.

The Marion County Highway Department reports a rough morning on the Route 161 Extension and Green Street Road where they asked motorists to stay off due to the extremely icy conditions.  That allowed crews to better work on problem spots.   The roads became better by late morning and then became clear of ice in the warmer afternoon temperatures.

The sheriff’s department reports a dozen vehicles slid off the roads Monday morning, including one person twice.  Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Salem Public Works Director Annette Sola says city crews mixed sand with salt when treating the icy surface Monday morning which should help if temperatures drop overnight.   All city streets were mostly wet by late morning.

Salem Police report only one incident of a car sliding into a mailbox on North Hotze Road.

Centralia Public Works Department reports all roads were back to normal by early afternoon, but they are continuing to salt the overpasses to make sure ice doesn’t form again when temperatures fall later.

The winter weather advisory that was originally scheduled to go until nine Monday night was canceled around 3:30 when high temperatures climbed over 40 degrees, much higher than the forecasted high of 33.  Temperatures are now forecast to stay above freezing overnight so no additional road problems are now anticipated.
