Temperature at Salem water plant dips to -4 early Sunday morning; more snow on the way?

By Bruce Kropp Jan 14, 2024 | 10:28 AM

The official low temperature for Sunday morning at the Salem Water Treatment Plant is four degrees below zero.

The temperature felt much colder than that due to a brisk wind that sent the wind chill down to -30 degrees at times.

It has been colder, though.  The record low was -9 recorded on this day in 1964.  It’s also been a lot warmer.  The record high for Sunday is 60 degrees which was recorded in 1959.

The Salem Water Plant recorded an additional two-100ths of an inch of blowing light snow.

While road conditions are normal across Clinton and Marion Counties and further south, some icy patches are reported even on the major highways in Fayette, Clay, and Effingham Counties all the way into the Chicago area.  Conditions are generally worse in the northern half of the state.  Click here to see the latest road conditions.

We could still see a little more light snow before the Arctic front moves out of the area after Tuesday.
