Salem City Council sells land in Industrial Park to Bromley Excavating

The Salem City Council has sold 13 acres of ground in the west side industrial park to Bromley Excavating of Centralia. They will pay $5,000 an acre for the ground.

City Manager Rex Barbee says the land is on the east-southeast side of the industrial park and includes part of one of the borrow pit lakes along I-57.

“They take concrete that has been excavated out of roadways, parking lots whatever, bring it in and have a crushing machine that breaks it into smaller chunks. They can then use it for aggregate for new concrete.  Also probably do some asphalt grinding as well.”

Barbee has been told the company plans to have three to five employees at its new Salem operation. He anticipates operations will begin as quickly as possible.

In other action, the board approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Illinois Department of Transportation on the Route 37 resurfacing project from Madison Street on the north side of Salem to Cherry Street on the north side of Kinmundy.  Under the agreement, Salem will be responsible for any city utilities that need to be moved and responsible for any approaches onto Route 37.   The $13.4 million project will go out for bid in March.

The council removed Chico’s Restaurant on East Main Street from the downtown Tax Increment Financing District to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest since the business is owned by the city’s Economic Development Director Lea Dellicarpini.
