The Illinois Department of Transportation is preparing to resurface and make other improvements to Route 37 from Madison Street on the north side of Salem to Cherry Street on the north side of Kinmundy.

The Salem City Council Monday night is being asked to allow Mayor Nic Farley to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that would make the city responsible for maintaining city street entrances to Route 37 once the work is complete. The city is also being asked to allow contractors to enter their right of way and to exercise its franchise rights to cause private utilities to be relocated, if required, at no expense to the state. IDOT reports the project is anticipated to be on the March 8th bid letting. The estimated cost of the project is $13.4-million.

The council will be asked to remove Chico’s Restaurant from the downtown tax increment financing district due to the property being owned by the city’s Economic Development Director Lea Dellicarpini.

A closed session is on the agenda to discuss the potential sale of real estate.

The council meeting begins at six Monday night at Salem City Hall.
