Edna M. Holthaus, age 89, of rural Beckemeyer, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on July 10, 1935, in Carlyle, Illinois, the daughter of Henry and Susan (Isaak) Krebs. On October 22, 1958, she married Edward Holthaus at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle, Illinois.
Mrs. Holthaus is survived by her children, Carol (Kenneth) Bromley of Beckemeyer, Linda (Patrick) Timmermann of Breese, Ronald (Susan) Holthaus of Beckemeyer, Sandra (Thomas) Hemker of Bartelso, and Angela (Mark) Voss of Carlyle; her grandchildren, Kelly (Jason) Keserauskis, Carrie (Adam) Jurgensmeyer, Krista Bromley and Kimberly Bromley, Justin Timmermann, Cole (Haley) Timmermann and Drew (fiancé Elyse Faust) Timmermann, Brittney (special friend, London Kampwerth) Holthaus, Cody (special friend, Madi Vandeloo) Holthaus, Jenna (special friend, Jordan Mugele) Hemker and Zachary Hemker, Michael Voss, Amanda (fiancé, Ethan Tebbe) Voss, Adam Voss (special friend, Alannah Sarclette); her great grandchildren, Abigail and Addilyn Keserauskis, Jonathan, Lauren and Mason Jurgensmeyer, Rhys and Gavin Mitchell, Kason Standerfer and Myles Timmermann; her in-laws, Gertrude Holthaus of Aviston, Lois Holthaus of Breese, Julius (Kathy) Holthaus of Bartelso, Linda Holthaus of Beckemeyer, Elmer Holthaus of Beckemeyer, Eugene Bruggemann of Highland and Virgil (Peggy) Holthaus of Beckemeyer and numerous nieces and nephews.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband on June 27, 2022, her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Celia Holthaus; her siblings, Henry Krebs, Jr. (in infancy), Eugene (Audrey) Krebs, Mildred (Wilford) Kapp, Elmer (Lucille) Krebs and Marcella (Cornelius “Bud”) Kampwerth; her in-laws, Robert Holthaus (in infancy), Florence (Clarence) Hammer, Victor Holthaus, Lucille Holthaus, Richard Holthaus, Paul (Janet) Holthaus, Kathryn “Dolly” Holthaus, Louis, Jr. Holthaus, Andrew Holthaus and Elizabeth “Bettyann” Bruggemann; her nephews Bobby and Kyle Holthaus; her niece, Phyllis Hudspeth and her great nephew, Austin VonderHaar.
Edna graduated from St. Mary’s Grade School and when she turned sixteen, worked at Moran Shoe Factory until she married her sweetheart, Eddie. Edna was a farmer’s wife while she raised their family and later years babysat grandchildren and many neighborhood children. She and Eddie enjoyed selling produce from their vast vegetable garden. Edna spent many days in her kitchen canning vegetables, cooking and baking. In their retirement, Edna and Eddie loved to take bike rides to town but most of all enjoyed spending time with their family.
Edna was a very dedicated Christian and a strong believer in daily prayer. She would pray the rosary and watch Mass several times a day.
She was a faithful member of St. Anthony Church in Beckemeyer and also a member of St. Ann’s Ladies Sodality. Edna quilted many quilts for the church picnic and family members.
Visitation for Mrs. Holthaus will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Beckemeyer on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 8:30 -11:00 AM. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM on Thursday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, with Fr. Chuck Tuttle, Celebrant. Following the Mass, Mrs. Holthaus will be laid to rest at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Beckemeyer. A luncheon will be served at Beckemeyer American Legion.
