Shirley Plowman, 92, of Centralia passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia. She was born on November 27, 1931, the daughter of John and Vergie (Frailey) Plowman in Vandalia.

Survivors include her cherished brother, Charles Plowman of Centralia, formerly of Decatur; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, John and Vergie Plowman; 5 sisters; and 3 brothers.

Shirley was a faithful member of Eternity Baptist Church, where her servant’s heart was put to good use and adored her church family. She enjoyed playing the piano from the time her Father, got the family a piano. She worked for 3 years in the office at Harper Laundry in Vandalia. She went on to become a dedicated employee of Illinois Bell, AT &T as an operator for 44 years, until her retirement.  Shirley was a natural caretaker and cared for her parents until the time of their passing.  She passed that legacy on to her family and was so appreciative of the care she was given.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia with Rev Joseph Rhodes officiating. The burial will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Friends and relatives are welcome to a visitation time from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Shirley’s honor to the Eternity Baptist Church.
