A fire that started in the bedroom of a home occupied by Nathan Nelson at 305 West Olive was heavily damaged by fire and smoke Sunday morning.

Salem Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton says no one ended up being at home.

Fulton says, “When we got here, we had heavy smoke and fire on the west side of the house coming from a bedroom area. We made an initial attack through a window, knocked the fire down, then we sent interior crews in to do a primary search, found no one inside, and then just continued to extinguish the fire until it was out.”

Fulton says the fire appears to have started on a mattress.

Fulton says, “There’s extensive damage to the house. The fire broke through the ceiling in the bedroom and got up into the attic, and we’ve got a lot of water and smoke damage throughout.”

In order to make sure the fire was out in the blown-in insulation, a hole had to be cut in the roof of the home.

The State Fire Marshal’s office will be called in to investigate the cause of the fire.

The home is owned by Rebecca Jean of South Franklin Street in Salem.

The fire call came in at 7:44 Sunday morning with firemen on the scene for about an hour and a half.

Odin Firemen provided mutual aid at the scene while Kell Firemen stood by at the Salem Fire Station in the event of another fire.

As firemen were clearing the scene, a fire alarm sounded at XPO Logistics on West Main and Selmaville Road.   There was no fire.
