2024 10/11 – James Phillips

James R. Phillips, age 82 of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 surrounded by his family.

James was born on April 6, 1942, in Salem the son of Howard Phillips and Marjorie (Akes) Merrihew.  He married Phyllis Shuler in 1964 in Salem and she survives in Salem.

In addition to his wife, Phyllis Phillips; he is survived by his brothers, Ray Casner of Salem, Dave Merrihew of Flora, Howard Phillips and significant other Valerie Garren of Iuka, and Clifford Phillips and wife Jennie of Salem; daughter, Shelly Hodges of Huntington Beach, CA; grandchildren, James Hodges, Jon Hodges, Melissa Hodges, and Lucas Hodges; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sue Eskew; and brothers, Gary Phillips and Bill Merrihew.

James worked for 24 years at World Color Press.  He enjoyed fishing; hunting crow, deer, and duck; traveling with his buddies; driving through the country counting deer; dancing; and sitting on the deck feeding the squirrels.

Funeral services for James R. Phillips will be held at Noon on Friday, October 11th, 2024, at Grace Church of the Nazarene in Salem with Trent Ice officiating.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of the service at the church.  The burial will be in Martin Cemetery in Alma.  Military Rites to honor James’ service to the United States Navy, will be accorded at the cemetery by the Salem American Legion.  Memorial contributions can be made to Tunnels to Towers, Shop with a Cop, or Grace Church of the Nazarene and can be received at the church or Crouse Funeral Home.  Online condolences can be left at www.CrouseFH.com.
