Claude L. Howell Sr., age 83 of Salem, went to be with his Lord at his home on Thursday, September 12th, 2024.
Claude was born on April 11, 1941, in Iuka, IL to the late Martin and Effie (Snow) Howell. Claude married Hazel (Durbin) Howell on October 21, 1958, in Jefferson County and she preceded him in death.
Claude worked at Plano Molding, Texaco Service Station, Exxon Service Station in Arizona, Hollywood Brands, and Swan, Inc.
Claude was a musician, self-teaching himself to play any string instrument. He enjoyed old country music such as Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and many more.
Claude was known for his western-style clothes and cowboy hats, boots, string ties, and collar tips. For those attending the services, you are welcome to dress in any Western wear that you would like, honoring Claude’s life and memory.
Claude loved to garden and he has a green thumb for any plant or flower.
Survivors include his lady friend, Patty Tucker; his daughter, Patty Messervy and husband Rex; son Claude L. Howell Jr. and wife Barbie; grandchildren, Kimberly Baldwin and husband Trevor, Jeffrey McDaneld and wife Shawnee, Brandon Howell and wife Jennifer, and Laci Simmons and husband Jesse; great-grandchildren, Amelia, Allayna, Hadley, Karter, Alexandria, Elizabeth, Lincoln, and Shawna; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his late wife, Hazel; brothers, Ervin, Ray, and Max Howell; and sisters, Bessie Gaston, Darlene Goostree, Wauneta Howell, and Nora Hayes.
Funeral Services for Claude Louis Howell Sr. will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem with Claude L. Howell Jr. officiating. A visitation will be held from Noon until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Peaceful Valley Cemetery in Odin. Memorial contributions can be made to Peaceful Valley Cemetery and can be received at Crouse Funeral Home. Crouse Funeral Home in Salem is assisting the family with arrangements.
