Fire departments from across the metro-east and south central Illinois all provided assistance on Monday in knocking down a fire in part of the Highway 111 Salvage outside of Granite City.  The fire had started on Sunday night and reportedly send flames more than 100 feet in the air along with huge billowing clouds of smoke.

The Centralia City Fire Department helped in a foam shuttle to a back part of the large salvage business that was on fire, while the Centralia Fire Protection District, Odin Fire, and Wayne City Fire assisted with a tanker shuttle with water to supply the firefighting efforts.

The area departments all arrived around noon on Monday to relieve other departments that had been on the scene for eight hours.  They stayed until around eight Monday night when other units were called in.  By then, Centralia City Firemen say a large part of the fire had been knocked down.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.  Hundreds of vehicles were parked side by side and the fire jumped from vehicle to vehicle.  Many appeared to have already been processed.  There were no injuries reported.
