Salem has a big weekend of Bicentennial activities starting Friday night and continuing through Saturday evening.
The Salem Community Band and Choir perform at seven Friday night at B.E. Gum Gymnasium at Salem Community High School.
Saturday begins with a 5K run at 8:30 and a Sand Volleyball Tournament at nine. You must register in advance for the Sand Volleyball Tournament by contacting alaird35@gmail.com.
The Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate the ‘Never Forget’ Garden at the Bryan Statue at ten.
A number of activities begin at the park at ten. They include Reenactment Groups and Historical Displays from ten to two. A Civil War-era cannon will be fired on the hour. There will be various historical displays.
Actors portraying some early Salem Citizens will make their presentations at eleven and one. Food trucks and vendors will open at eleven. Judging for the best patriotical golf car will be held at noon.
Music begins on the Bryan Park Stage at three with a Sing-along with Mr. Bill. Mayor Nic Farley will make remarks and receive a House Resolution from State Representative Blaine Wilhour at 3:45. Jeremy Adam and the Surviving Members perform at four, Taylor Steele and the Love Preachers at 5:20, and Greg Klyman and the Great Wide Open at seven.
The Marion County Retired Teachers Association invites you to visit the one-room school from four to seven on Friday and ten to noon and one to four on Saturday. Retired teachers will be in attendance to answer questions.
Much of Bryan Memorial Park will be closed to vehicular traffic and those attending the events in the park are asked to park at Salem Community High School and take a shuttle bus to the park. The bus will also take you to the One Room School House memorial on the northeast side of the SCHS campus.
