Gas and grocery taxes go up Saturday

Some new laws and tax increases take effect July 1st.

Starting Saturday, the 1% sales tax on groceries returns and a delayed 3-cent increase in the motor fuel tax will be implemented.   Governor JB Pritzker says putting off these fees for awhile helped families struggling with rising prices.

“What we did last year was a temporary measure because we had a very high inflation.  Inflation you may noticed have come down.  But we had very high inflation and wanted to do everything that we could.  We provided 1.8-billion dollars of tax relief for families across Illinois.”

The Governor reminds that revenue from the grocery tax goes to communities across the state.

“I would like very much to eliminate entirely the grocery tax, but it is a matter of local governments and what they would do if they didn’t have that income in eliminating the grocery tax.”

New laws taking effect on the first include one making September 17th, Constitution Day, a commemorative holiday at school.  Another will help those leaving the care of the Department of Children and Family Services search for former foster parents and siblings.
