Jefferson Fire and four other departments providing mutual aid fought a fire in a 20 foot tall pile of sawdust and 15 piles of wood at K.V. Trees on North Iris Lane southeast of Dix.
Jefferson Fire reports the cause of the fire has not been determined. An employee had been at the facility earlier in the day and returned Sunday afternoon to find the fire. He initially tried to put out the fire himself with a bulldozer, but neighbors called the fire department when seeing all the smoke.
Jefferson Fire called Mt. Vernon City, Kell, Centralia Fire District and Wayne City to the scene while Woodlawn and Waltonville stood by at the Jefferson Fire Station in the event of another fire.
Firemen were able to get water to fight the fire from a pond on the property.
The fire call came in at 2:18 Saturday afternoon and remained on the scene until 6:50 pm.
