The Salem Wildcats Boys Track and Field team held their awards banquet Tuesday May 30th. Varsity letters and certificates were handed out to members of the team. Special recognition went to Caleb Smith and Cole Johnson for earning IHSA 2A All State status.
Smith was the 2A state champion in the discus and the runner up in the shot put, while Johnson placed 7th in the discus. The IHSA State meet was held over the Memorial Day weekend at the campus of Eastern Illinois University, the 2 day competition started on Friday with the preliminaries and the finals on Saturday.
The Robert Raver MVP Best in Field and the Wildcat Most Improved Award went to Caleb Smith. The BE Gum MVP Best on the Track award went to the 4×1 and 4×2 relay teams, the members of the team, (that also earned Cahokia All Conference Honors for the 2×200 relay, with a 1st place finish at the Cahokia T&F Championships) were Miking Ettress, Jervace Mayes, Sean Thornton, and Sam Greene.
The awards for the Most Points went to Freshman Hunter Malan, Sophomore Miking Ettress, Junior Caleb Smith, and Senior Cole Johnson.
Other Cahokia All Conference Honors went to Alek Bandy pole vault, Thornton 100M dash, Ettress long jump, and Smith in the shot and discus.
A recap of the season included a 2nd place finish behind Herrin at the Buzz Bradly Invite, a 3rd place finish at the Cahokia Conference Championships, and a 7th place team finish at the IHSA 2A Boys Track & Field Championships.
