Track: A pair of Salem Wildcats advanced to the state track finals at Eastern Illinois University. Caleb Smith is the top qualifier in the discus with a throw of 53.50 heading into the finals. Teammate Cole Johnson was 8th in 50.17. Smith also was the 2nd best qualifier in the discus with his throw of 18.15. Centralia’s JehChys Brown qualified 3rd in the shot at 17.94 and 3rd in the discus in 52.43.
Tennis: The Salem doubles tennis team of Logan Bandy and Alex Tate went 1-2 in the trip to the state championships in the Chicago area. They opened with a loss 1-6, 1-6 before winning 6-2, 6-3. They were eliminated with a 6-7, 2-6 loss.
Baseball: The baseball postseason continued yesterday. In 3a regional semifinals at Mount Vernon, Herrin eliminated Centralia 5-3 and will get the host Rams in the finals. Waterloo beat Civic Memorial at Mascoutah 6-5. Effingham 2-1 over Charleston at Olney.
In 2a Sectional Semifinals at Breese Central, the Columbia Eagles dominated Newton beating them 10-0 in five innings setting up a showdown with Father McGivney in the finals. At DuQuoin, Zeigler Royalton won 1-0 over Harrisburg.
The Christ Our Rock Stallions advanced to the Greenville Sectional Finals with an 8-5 win over Greenfield.
Softball: In 3a softball regional finals today. Civic Memorial hosts Highland, Charleston and Effingham play at Centralia, Jerseyville hosts Waterloo, and Herrin and Carbondale play from Marion.
In 2a sectional finals, Freebug hosts Columbia.
In 1a at South Central, Windsor/Stew-Stras takes on Casey-Westfield.
Soccer: In 3a girls soccer sectional finals at Edwardsville today, O’Fallon takes on Minooka.
In 2a sectional finals at Mascoutah, Triad plays Waterloo.
